Happy Easter!

I decided on a German theme because on a recent half price books run I found a book about Russian, German, Polish cooking. I was hoping for a pierogies or pel meni recipe but they didn't have one. I did see a recipe for Spaetzl that I decided I would try to reproduce. Besides family and friends, I think one of the things Joshua and I miss the most about Appleton is the Old Bavarian. We try to make our home versions but they will never be as good. So then to round out the Easter menu I decided on Joshua's pan fried Schnitzl and mom's Cheesy potatoes.
The Spaetzl was a lot harder than I thought it would be. First of all, the directions said to use a mixer and I really need to learn my lesson that if I'm making dough, I DO NOT USE THE MIXER. My hand mixers suck dough straight up the beaters. So the next time I'm feeling ambitious enough to try this recipe I will use the food processor. Also, it is really hard to make the spaetzl as small as the restaurant kind I'm used to. They ended up the size of chicken fingers and it really creeped me out. They looked like some type of sea creature the way they curled, like albino shrimp or something. I ended up cutting them into smaller pieces and then seasoning and the results were sufficient. Since no one in my family makes Spaetzl yet, I think I should probably work on perfecting it and then it can be my thing. :)
We also had a dessert of Black Forest Cake. I got in the baking mood last Sunday but only got as far as the cake layers because the grocery store I ran to after church did not have the right pitted cherries. I didn't have time to run elsewhere so I decided to wrap the cake layers up and stick them in the freezer until I could get back to them. Well, they fit the menu perfectly for today so I finished them up. Unfortunately, the cake layers did not freeze well. They are pretty dry. Live and learn. It did turn out better looking than it tasted at least.

This picture shows how level the cake turned out. I was expecting that to be a hassle but I think this is the first time I used these pans for a layer cake since I got them for Christmas a couple of years ago. I am very impressed by how evenly they bake.

And the final results! The recipe I followed did a piping of frosting around the top and bottom but I thought it looked nice enough like this with out the added work. Also, this recipe did not contain the traditional kirschwasser because I did not want to hunt down a bottle to only use a little bit of it. Since Joshua really liked the cake I think I may get a bottle since this will probably be made more frequently. Also, we decided we will probably get ice cream to eat the rest of it because then it's harder to tell how dry it is. The cherries and frosting helped that problem as well.

This Ain't My First Time at the Rodeo

I just got a shredded beef sandwich. Also - I was not very thrilled to have my picture taken while eating but I'm going to post it to the blog since we don't get out all that much. You don't get to see many action shots. What I did today instead of cleaning

My Favorite Homemade Christmas Present

I have a lot of the fabric left as well as the gold trim which I would not recommend using if you wanted to make your own version. It's hard to see with the photo quality being so bad but the ends unravel which is why I decided to use hot glue instead of sewing the trim on. Done differently I would use more of a gold ribbon and sew it on. However - If any of our 6 readers out there would like one (for free) let me know. I don't know what else I would do with turquoise silk so I'd love an excuse to try this again. My Favorite Christmas Project
This is by far my favorite thing I made for Christmas. I didn't really use a tutorial for this because I had seen many yarn wreaths when I started following craft blogs. I've now discovered that they're common for interior decorating and all sorts of holidays. Before I made or bought my decorations I realized I would need to plan carefully since we are very limited on storage space. As a result, I decided to make this wreath in a neutral color that would work in my living room year round. So I took a straw wreath from Michael's (about 3 or 4 dollars) and 1 skein of yarn from Hobby Lobby (about $5 but I had the 40% off coupon!) and wrapped the yarn around the wreath. I only used about half of the skein too. All I needed was one dab of hot glue to get it started then when it was finished I just tied the top. The snowflakes are felt buttons I bought at Walmart for $1. I bought snowflakes, poinsettias and gingerbread felt buttons for the stockings I made but none really worked on the stocking. I really hated how the stockings turned out, which was my first sewing project with my new machine so I will not be posting those! The poinsettias on this wreath are not the aforementioned felt buttons but they are made by two pieces of red felt (.25) and four gold beads hot glued to the center. I tucked a sewing pin into the bottom felt layer to position the poinsettias and then took sewing thread and handsewed the snowflakes. After Christmas I was able to take all the decorations off the wreath and now I have a blank grey wreath sitting on my wall waiting to become something else. I haven't decided what yet. Since our artwork in the living room is Dutch themed I will hopefully get around to finding a felt or cotton tulip that I like and put that on the wreath until at least fall rolls around. In case you didn't figure it out, the wreath does not involve a sewing machine at all! Perfect craft for under $10 (only that high if you would need to purchase a glue gun for about $4 with out a coupon). Thrifty crafts are for sure my favorite.

Blogspiration
Home Ec 101 - If I want to figure out how to clean something on the cheap this is where I go. I bought Borax, Washing Soda, Vinegar and Bleach and usually only need to use some combination of these ingredients. I've read in "green" (I really hate that word but can't think of another one to use in this situation) and frugal blogs that your grandmother didn't have the majority of products for cleaning we have today but they did just fine. I haven't been able to get rid of my magic eraser yet though (thanks Jodi for tipping us off to that one).
I follow 7 "frugal" blogs but here are my two favorites. My New Years Resolution was to start couponing and figure out how to spend 13 dollars on 300 dollars worth of groceries which is apparently possible. It is all greek to me. It's not going well but these two blogs definitely help.
Bargain Briana
Bargain Babe
I've discovered that I love Craft "link parties" so the majority of Craft blogs that I follow are a collection of craft tutorials.
Sew, Mama, Sew - I think everyone who follows me knows this website but I'm putting it out there anyways.
A Girl and a Glue Gun - I have no idea how she has the energy to do all these crafts. I don't have kids and I get tired just reading what she does!
Someday Crafts - The title says it all, crafts to make someday...
One Pretty Thing - By far my favorite craft site. I mentioned it below but seriously I LOVE this blog's craft round ups. Not only did I find a lot of the blogs I follow through this but when I want to make something it is the first place I start to find a tutorial. ** Special shout out to Alicia - If you find anything on the Wedding part of this website I will seriously make it for you. I'm afraid to go onto it for fear that I will start sending you tons and tons of crap that you don't need or want for the wedding!
Sew Retro - Basically a show off blog for clothing made from vintage patterns. I mean that in a good way of course. There are definitely things on here you will hate and some things you will love (if you love vintage patterns/clothing).
Hostess with the Mostess - Someday I will throw a party that looks like one of these. I shared the Sugar Plum Fairy Dessert party with Lauren and Mom around Christmas and really wished I could've created that for Lauren's visit.... Which by the way I totally could have but a certain someone with a beard would've been mad at me for being too spendy.
So there it is. I have plenty of inspiration but not really sure where to go next now that Christmas is over. Christmas was a really definable goal and that isn't around any more. I think I'm going to start on Apartment projects that will start to make my tiny little one bedroom look a little more purposeful. So I need to find design blogs to start following. Feel free to comment with some ones you may know of.
Where to start?
